We are proud to host the largest international gathering of European Firemen in 2017.
Sønderborg is situated in the south of Denmark, approx. 30 km above the German border. A region with strong and proud traditions in the field of volunteer fire departments: We have 17 volunteer fire brigades with over 300 firefighters. The municipality of Sønderborg has approximately 76,000 inhabitants.
The tradition of volunteer fire departments has its origins in the many village communities throughout the municipality.
It is an honour for us to organize the 2017 Sternfahrt, which will give contribute to awareness of the tasks of the Sternfahrt; the exchange of experiences and the strengthening of social and professional networks between fire and rescue teams throughout Europe.
Sønderborg is the locomotive of the region in the field of culture and events of international character. We have an active German minority, which contributes to the cultural diversity of which we are proud and for which we are known. We have large concert halls and many other venues, unique historical sites, museums, palaces and castles, and a fantastic nature with 200 km of coastline.
Internationally, Sønderborg is known for its vision to be Europe's first CO2-neutral region by 2029 - a vision which meant that the municipality in 2010 was one of the winners of theEuropean Unions' 'Sustainable Energy Europe Award'. Sønderborg city is developing a modern harbour district based on the master plan designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry.
As host city for the 2017 Sternfart we can offer beautiful nature and a gathering in festive surroundings and in addition share the know-how we have acguired through the coorperation with the German Rescue Services as part of the Interreg Project 'Rescue without Borders', which started in 2011.
We look forward to welcome you in Sønderborg!
